Welcome to the Boston Experiential Environmental Education Program Directory!

Girls by River In this on-line directory you will find a current listing of experiential environmental education (E3) programs offered for Boston's youth. For the purposes of this directory, we define an E3 program as any hands-on learning activity which helps Boston ’s youth gain a better understanding of nature and the impact of human activities on environmental quality, as well as developing their skills to be good stewards of the environment. The E3 programs currently offered to Boston youth cover a broad diversity of topics and learning approaches, from programs offered in the classroom to unique outdoor environmental adventures.

The Directory is organized into several sections in order to make the information we have collected as useful as possible to a range of different audiences. The ORGANIZATION section presents information about each organization offering one or more E3 programs. The PROGRAMS section describes in detail the characteristics of each E3 program offered. The SCHOOLS SERVED section provides a listing of programs by school, for those programs that are school-based (Photo Credit: The Food Project).

The E3 Directory can be used as a tool to help you identify programs to interest your child. You may browse the directory in several useful ways.  In the PROGRAM SECTION you can sort programs by their characteristics.  The SCHOOL SECTION allows you to browse school-based programs.

If you have an idea of the sort of activities or learning topics you or your child are interested in, you will find this information under the PROGRAM section of the directory. Within this section, you can display a list of all the programs in the directory, each with a brief description. From there, you may choose to look at the details of any program that interests you.  In the Program section there are also tools to help you sort programs by various program characteristics, including the age group for which the program is offered, program habitats and type of experience.

The E3 Directory can be used as a tool to help you identify programs of interest to you and your classroom. In the PROGRAMS section, you may view a summary list of all the programs and, based on your interest, explore in detail the characteristics of each program.

For each program listed, you will be able to view and sort by program attributes, including whether or not the program is school-based, the age group intended for the program, the types of learning activities offered, academic focus areas, and whether the program is aligned with Federal or State instructional standards such as the MA Science and Technology frameworks.

Are you an E3 organization/provider?

CanoesThe E3 Directory provides E3 organizations serving Boston’s youth with a powerful tool to understand what other programs are being offered in the Boston area and where and how they are delivered. This understanding can, in turn, provide you with insight into potential cross-organization collaborative efforts and knowledge-sharing opportunities (Photo Credit: Boston Natural Area Network).

Who created this directory?

The Boston Experiential Environmental Education (E3) Program Directory was created by the Barr Foundation, at the request of members of Boston's E3 community who proposed that a current, on-line database of E3 programs targeting Boston youth would not only facilitate better collaboration among various E3 organizations, but could also act as a valuable resource for parents, students, and teachers.

The Barr Foundation is a private foundation committed to enhancing the quality of life for all of Boston ’s citizens. Our primary areas of emphasis are education, the environment, and arts and culture. One of the Foundation’s environmental strategies is increasing environmental citizenship. The theory of change related to this strategy assumes that by increasing access to quality experiential environmental education (E3) programs, especially for children, we will increase environmental stewardship. More information about the Barr Foundation is available at www.barrfoundation.org.
